Mental health care as we know is expensive and inaccessible for everyone especially for those on the margins including the LGBT*QIA+ community. There are only a few mental health practioners who are queer and trans* friendly. Even during pre- pandemic times we felt the constant need to connect with each other, listen to, express our loneliness, fear, anxieties, losses and the pandemic has only exacerbated this need. We run a peer-counselling helpline and provide professional mental health support to people across the LGBT*QIA+ spectrum. Since July 2019 we have received 227 calls on our helpline, of which 101 were to gender-based violence support services and 58 were to access mental health services. We also do crisis intervention for people facing gender-based violence at home, in public, and/or in their workspaces. We also conduct listening circle and organise meet-ups to talk, rant, share our experiences and thereby, extend our solidarity to each othe Please call +91-9818151707 for more details to access these support services.

Mental health care as we know is expensive and inaccessible for everyone, especially for those on the margins including the LGBT*QIA+ community. There are only a few mental health practitioners who are queer and trans* friendly. To address the need for mental healthcare support in queer and trans communities, we have set up a full-time mental healthcare unit providing pro bono psychotherapy to queer and trans clients. Even during pre-pandemic times, we felt the constant need to connect with each other, listen to, and express our loneliness, fear, anxieties, and losses and the pandemic has only exacerbated this need. Nazariya is a community-based organization. As a CBO we are making efforts to ensure that the community gets a chance to come together in a safe space and meet and share their experiences. As a part of this effort, Nazariya hosts ‘Q-Tales’, a listening circle for queer and trans* persons once every month. So far we have hosted an art therapy workshop, open mics, and film screenings. We also collaborate with other organizations that would like to co-host the listening circle with us.
Trans people need accurate Ids and documents to open bank accounts, enroll in educational institutes, secure jobs, and travel. They face a lot of obstacles in going about their everyday life as the documents that they possess are inconsistent with their self-determined identities. Moreover, the harrowing process of acquiring new IDs creates a deterrent in efforts to avail of them in the first place. We have intervened in these areas and facilitated this process. So far Nazariya has helped queer and trans people apply for and acquire transgender certificates, and ID proofs, and facilitated name-changing processes in aadhar cards and pan cards. We also helped some queer and trans* people open their bank accounts.

We conduct training programs on gender and sexuality with private and government institutions. Discrimination faced by people marginalised because of their gender identity and sexual orientation from family, school, friends, and workspace is a reality. This along with the intersection of caste, class, religion, ability, and ethnicity adds to the discrimination and violence faced by them. Through our gender sexuality workshops, we want to enable participants to understand these marginalisations, discriminations, and intersections and equip participants to see the world from the lens of gender and sexuality. Additionally, another important component to our work is related to initiating conversations/building capacities of organizations around burnout prevention, stress management, diversity and inclusion at the workspace.
